WATERLOO - George Lavern Schmidt, 72, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., formerly of Waterloo, died at home Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, of natural causes.

He was born March 28, 1941, in Bassett, son of Les and Wilma Taylor Schmidt. He married Doris Guhlow on Aug. 27, 1961, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waterloo; she died June 6, 2005.

A graduate of Waterloo East High School, Mr. Schmidt then began working at the Waterloo Courier in various positions, retiring in 2003.

Survived by two daughters, Michelle (Gary) Gilbert of Waterloo and Mary Kathryn (Kevin) Robbie of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Nicole and Ryan Gilbert, and Katy and Chase Hamilton; two brothers, Larry (Jennifer) of Jesup and Robert "Bob" (Dixie) of Dunkerton; and three sisters, Karen Crane and Karol Minty, both of Waterloo, and Judy (Vern) Schellhorn of Dunkerton.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, DJ Hamilton.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 234 S. Hackett Road. There will be no visitation.
