GLADICE SEARS DIES AT AGE 78

Committal services were held at the graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery Friday afternoon for Mrs. Gladice Noble Sears, 79, of Waterloo, who died Tuesday at Allen Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Nashua, being born January 1900, to Henry and Mary Cagley Noble. She married Varner R. Sears in 1918 at the Little Brown Church. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Sears started her career in education as a rural teacher. During the summer she attended the former ISTC (now UNI) in Cedar Falls. She received her degree at the age of 36 and became a high school principal, serving two schools in that capacity. She then associated with the Hamilton Business College in Mason City and became head of the school's academic program.

In 1951 she became the thrid president of Gates Business College in Waterloo. She was named Waterloo Woman of the Year in 1961. She was the first president of the Waterloo Altrusa Club. She was a past prsident of the Central Commercial Teachers Association and had served as secretary-treasurer of the Office of Executives Club. She retired as president of Gates College in 1967, her son Stuart succeeding her, and became chairman of the board.

Survivors in addition to Stuart are another son, N. James of Des Moines; a sister, Bertha Hayward of Waterloo; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Stuart now lives in Madison, Wisconsin.
