ELLEN MARGARET AAKVIK JONES
Born Canby, Minnesota, October 10, 1925, died in Cedar Falls, Iowa, December 18, 2000, at home, of cancer.
Daughter of George W. Aakvik and Iva Elizabeth McCallum. As a child, she also lived in Minneapolis, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis and Richmond, Indiana.
An accomplished pianist, she earned the degrees of Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and attended the Juilliard School and Earlham College. Her piano teachers included Karol Lisniewski and Robert Goldsand. She gave many recitals and was piano soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony and twice with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony.
She was a member of the School of Music at the University of Northern Iowa from 1948 to 1956 and some years later, taught at Wartburg College for a few years. Throughout, she continued to teach piano privately and frequently was a judge for local, district and statewide piano competitions.
She was the organist at St. Luke's Episcopal Church for many years. For one year, she was the music critic for the Waterloo Courier. She was member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Pi Kappa Lambda and Tri Kappa. She also belonged to L.M.I., P.E.O. and the 19th Century Club.
Survived by her husband; her daughter, Catherine J. Huffnagle of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; her son, Howard V. Jones III of Cedar Falls; and two grandchildren, Sean J. Huffnagle and Kayle M. Huffnagle.
Services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. There will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements are with Richardson Funeral Home.
The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be given to the Ellen and Howard Jones Fund at the UNI Foundation, an endowment to support solo recitals, especially piano. memorials to organization of the donor's choice.
