G. E. HUGHES, 71, CIVIC FIGURE IN LAWN CITY, DIES

Was Postmaster Two Terms Under Wilson; Good Roads Booster.

Cedar Falls, Feb. 16.—George W. Hughes, postmaster in Cedar Falls for two terms by appointment of Woodrow Wilson, died at his home here at noon today as result of apoplexy, having suffered his first attack a year ago and been in failing health since. He was 71 years old.

Mr. Hughes was noted for his intense enthusiasm in interests of movements and principles which appealed to him. He spent six years on the city council, beginning in 1900, during which he served as chairman of the street committee. His interest in good roads, however, extended outside the city and he frequently gave generously of his time to raising funds for highway improvements or organizations seeking better roads.

He also was an enthusiastic partisan of Cedar Falls band, in which his two sons have played many years. For 30 years he was a member of the committee which finances the band.

Mr. Hughes was a native of Indiana, having become a resident of Cedar Falls at the age of one year when hls parents settled at Webster City in Hamilton County. He came here from that place 34 years ago to establish the general agency of Champion Mower & Binder Co., which later was merged with International Harvester Company.

A proposal to move his headquarters to Dubuque was promptly vetoed by Hughes, who insisted on remaining here because of his interest in the band and the desire of his sons to remain in its' personnel.

He later was connected In a similar capacity with Moline Plow company, retiring some years ago. Mr. Hughes served as postmaster here from July 27, 1915, to May 27, 1924.

He Is survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter: Leo F., and Leslie Hughes, Cedar Falls, and Mrs. H. R. Wilson, Dysart. There also survive a brother and a sister, John H. Hughes, and Mrs. Mary Clifton both of Webster City.

No definite arrangements have been made for the funeral, but it is probable it will be held Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock from the St. Patrick's Church.
