WATERLOO - Helen P. Zellhoefer, 82, of 221 Columbia Circle, died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Allen Hospital of a heart attack.

She was born April 13, 1923, in Waterloo, son of Gerrit Henry and Irene Berg Hospers. She married Richard G. Zellhoefer on Dec. 21, 1948, at First Congregational Church in Waterloo.

Mrs. Zellhoefer graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1941 and received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Iowa in 1944, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She worked for the Army Hospital in Tacoma, Wash.; was assistant to the head of Philosophy and Religion Department at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.; and also worked as a radio personality for KWWL in Waterloo. She was past president of Kingsley PTA, Junior League of Waterloo and Cedar Falls, and Visiting Nurses Association; past president and board member of the Waterloo Public Library for more than 30 years; active member of the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery; and was a literacy instructor through Hawkeye Community College at the Jesse Cosby Center for a number of years. Her hobbies included travel, swimming and reading.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Susan H. Zellhoefer of Farmington, N.M., and Anne P. Zellhoefer of Madison, Wis.; a son, David R. of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Martin of Minneapolis, Daniel of New Mexico State University and Lynne of Waterloo; and a great-grandson, Jayden.

Preceded in death by a brother, Jan Dick Hospers.

There will be no services; she donated her body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Locke Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to Community Foundation of Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northeast Iowa for benefit of the Waterloo Public Library.
