WATERLOO - Merrill "Penn" Stoffregen, 81, of Waterloo, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Allen Hospital of a respiratory illness.

He was born Sept. 12, 1926, in rural Fayette County, son of William F. and Emma Heeron Stoffregen. He married Helen L. Bartie on Nov. 1, 1945, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sumner.

Mr. Stoffregen was a graduate of Sumner High School. He was employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 30 years, as a skilled tradesman, retiring Oct. 1, 1978. He was an avid bowler and active in the Local 838, UAW. He was a Boy Scout Master, directing his two sons through the rank of Eagle Scout.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, William (Diane) of Waterloo and David (Sharon) of Kokoma, Ind.; two daughters, Patti Sorge and Kathy (Pete) Myers, both of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, Brad Stoffregen, Kari Olschanski, Scott Sorge, Kaylene Orr, Breanne Myers, P.J. Myers, Kacie Stoffregen and Aubrey Stoffregen; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Virtus (Val) Stoffregen of Green Castle, Ind.

Preceded in death by a son-in-law, Art Sorge; and four brothers, Rhynard, Howard, Paul and Dale.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society or Cedar Bend Humane Society.
