WATERLOO - Rita Catherine Newton, 88, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Gilbertville, daughter of John and Anna Bovy Fischels. She married James Newton on May 26, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville; he died Dec. 9, 1967.

Mrs. Newton was employed at St. Edward School cafeteria, Bishops and Kmart. She was a volunteer at Covenant Medical Center until 2005 and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Survived by a son, Brother Dennis Newton SVD of Techny, Ill.; two daughters, Kathy (Gary) Miller of La Porte City and Candy (Chris) McKern of Kasson, Minn.; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by two sons, James L. and Terry; two grandsons, Christopher Newton and Troy Miller; four brothers, Peter (Roselle), Francis (Esther), Paul (Marion) and Irvin (Helen) Fischels; and three sisters, Pauline Fischels, Veronica (Joe) Demuth and Marie (Jim) Johannes.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. Catholic Order of Foresters rosary. Visitation also an hour before services Thursday at the church.
