WATERLOO - Merle Roy Martin, 87, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 20, 1918, on a farm near Traer, son of Melverne and Gladys Quintard Martin. He married Valentina Kuchynka in 1941, in St. Joseph, Mo.

He graduated from Orange High School with the class of 1936 and in 1942 entered World War II with the U.S. Army, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, serving at the 74th Field Hospital. After his discharge in 1946, the couple returned to Waterloo, and Mr. Martin worked at Jones Desoto-Plymouth and later opened Monarch Motors Dodge-Plymouth in Waverly.

In 1970, Mr. Martin created Martin Realtors, where he served as president and later chairman of the board. Merle and Valentina worked together for many years selling properties, building homes and managing properties. In 1992 Merle began stepping away and retiring and turned most of the duties to Valentina. Throughout the years he has been active at St. Edward's Catholic Church, served with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Board of Realtors, and received his 25-year plaque in 1986. He was also active in the Elks Club, American Legion and Sunnyside Country Club.

Survived by his wife; and a son, Gerald L. Martin (Jo Sloan-Martin) of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Edward.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

A memorial fund has been established.
