Richard John Tjabring, age 72, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Peter and Grace (Molendorp) Tjabring on February 28, 1933, in Aplington, Iowa. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1951. Following graduation Richard began working as a carpenter.

Richard was united in marriage with Delene Siebrands on December 12, 1959, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Following their marriage they made their home and remained living in Aplington. Richard was drafted into the United States Army on August 4, 1954. During this time he served overseas in Okinawa, Japan, and was honorably discharged on August 3, 1956. After returning home he continued to do carpentry work until 1959, when he was employed by John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. He worked as a machinist for 32 years and retired in 1990. Richard was a member of the Aplington AMVETS and the UAW Local 838th. He enjoyed vacationing in Minnesota and Canada, where he enjoyed fishing with family and friends. In addition he liked to go camping and hunting. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Richard died on Monday, September 26, 2005, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Beth; his parents; one sister, Jennie Kuper; and one brother, Conrad Tjabring.

Survived by his wife, Delene Tjabring of Aplington, Iowa; two sons, Randall (Sheryl) Tjabring of Aplington, Iowa, and Mark (Jodi) Tjabring of Aplington, Iowa; two daughters, Laura (Todd) Thompson of Aplington, Iowa, and Lisa (Mark) Crandall of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Jessica & Jennifer, Kelli & Ryan, Rebecca, Raylynn, and Shakira, Shayler & Shason; a niece, Judy Kuper; and a nephew, Jerry Kuper.

Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, September 29, 2005 at the Aplington Baptist Church in Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith officiating. Pianist was Suzie Smith. Vocalist Dan Smith sang “Untitled Hymn”. Congregational Hymns were “Because He Lives” and “Amazing Grace”. Honorary Casketbearers were Merle Uhlenhopp and Kenneth Mehmen. Casketbearers were Mark Tjabring, Randall Tjabring, Todd Thompson, Mark Crandall, Jerry Kuper, and Darren Siebrands. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa with Full Military Rites conducted by Aplington AMVETS Post # 102. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements.
