LA PORTE CITY -- Mary K. Steffens, 74, of La Porte City, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at her son’s home in La Porte City of cancer.

She was born Aug. 11, 1939, in Long Beach, Calif., daughter of LaVerne and Leone Keys Robinson. She married Lynn Steffens on Aug. 11, 1961, in Osage; he died Oct. 30, 2009.

She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, Council Bluffs, and Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls. Mrs. Steffens taught school in Osage, Orange Township and La Porte City Elementary.

Survived by two sons, Jeff (Heidi) of Traer and Ted (Rachele) of La Porte City; four grandchildren, Derek, Eric, Conner and Olivia; two sisters, Anne (Jeff) Walbwitz of Long Lone, Mo., and Alice (Ray) Johnson of Everett, Wash.; and her dog, Gus.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at American Lutheran Church, preceded by an hour of visitation, with inurnment in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. La Porte City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Memorials may be directed to the family or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Mary's hobbies were reading, gardening and quilting. During her long battle with asthma and cancer, she was sustained by family, friends and her faith.
