LA PORTE CITY -- Darlene M. Wagner, 80, formerly of La Porte City, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Solon Nursing Care Center, Solon.

She was born March 29, 1933, on a farm in Chickasaw County, daughter of Rudolph T. and Marie Weidler Mikes. She married Edwin M. Wagner in 1956; he died in August 1988.

She graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1950 and attended Wartburg College and University of Colorado at Boulder, receiving her degree in elementary education. She taught 34 1/2 years at the La Porte City Community Schools.

Survived by two sons, David (Michele) of Iowa City and Paul (Margaret) of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Linda (Michael) Kelley of Mount Pleasant; eight grandchildren, Melissa and Matthew Wagner of Iowa City, Sheila, Adam and Nicole Wagner of Cedar Rapids, and Daniel, Jackson and Grace Kelley of Mount Pleasant; and two sisters, Barbara (Harold) Diemer of Hawkeye and Georgia (Jerry) Gitch of Sumner.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with inurnment in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at La Porte City Funeral Home, with a 7 p.m. rosary; visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the Hawkins Memorial Library.

Darlene was active in her church and the National Education Association. She enjoyed reading, attending sporting events supporting her children, grandchildren, and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
