Private family service for Erwin D. Sias, 81, is pending, bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sias, who was born in Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday.

He graduated from West High School in Waterloo, attended Iowa State Teachers College and studied journalism at the University of Colorado.

He began a newspaper career on the news staff of the Daily Record in Cedar Falls, Iowa, then the Waterloo Courier. He later became chief of the Iowa bureau of International News Service (INS) in Des Moines, Iowa, before being transferred to the Washington, D. D. bureau of INS.

He covered a political heat before becoming news editor of the Washington bureau, where he worked for five years. He went on to work as an administrative assistant for an Iowa senator before accepting a job as editor of Sioux City Journal-Tribune Publications.

Mr. Sias retired in 1978 and moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

He also worked as a free-lance writer for outdoor magazines, including Outdoor Life. He was a member of the National Press Club and the Outdoor Writers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, two daughters, Carolyn Hollingsworth of Bonners Ferry and Nancy Sias of Pennsylvania; and two grandchildren, Marc Hollingsworth of Maryland and Andrea Hollingsworth of New Jersey.

BONNERS FERRY, IDAHO BONNERS FERRY, Idaho (AP) Erwin D. Sias, a former editor of the Sioux City Journal, died of pneumonia Friday. He was 81.

After attending the Iowa State Teachers College and the University of Colorado, Sias worked at the now-defunct Cedar Falls Daily Record, the Waterloo Courier and the International News Service in Des Moines and Washington, D.C.

He was named editor of the Journal in Sioux City in 1961 and worked there until 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, two daughters and two grandchildren.
