John Elwood "Jack" Carey, 81, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Waterloo, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2006.

He was a respected newspaper editor of the Louisville Times newspaper until his retirement in 1983; after which he became a tutor in literacy to those who aspired to broaden their education and leadership skills. He served in the 84th division of the Army Infantry during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service in Belgium and Germany.

Jack was preceded in death by the two loves of his life; Patricia Slade of Iowa, and Lelia Beaudry of Michigan.

He is survived by his children, Adrienne Wright (John), Patricia Haist (Randy Wellman) and Dr. Steven Haist (Meg); five grandchildren, Kyle and Rebecca Mullins, Hannah Wellman, Sarah and Will Haist; brother, Richard Carey of Palatine, Ill.; nephew, Steve Carey of Charlottesville, Va.; and his beloved pets, Lady and Josephine.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Resthaven Funeral Home, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218. Visiting friends may gather at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

A "special thanks" to the nursing staff at Baptist Hospital East ICU and to the nursing staff at the Palliative Care of Baptist Hospital East and to Kathy and her family next door to Jack.
