HUDSON-A two-car, head on collision in Hudson early Friday claimed the life of a Traer man and left another man hospitalized, authorities said.

The dead man was identified as Ricky Joe Harrison, 24. Authorities said he suffered crushing chest injuries in the accident.

Black Hawk County sheriffs deputies said the accident occurred about 3:10 a.m. on rain-slickened Highway 63 in Hudson. The accident remained under investigation Friday. Authorities said Harrison was dead on arrival at Schoitz Memorial Hospital, where he was taken by a Waterloo Fire Department ambulance.

Funeral services were held here Monday afternoon for Ricky Joe Harrison, 24, Traer, who was killed early Firday, October 18, in a two-car collision in Hudson.

Harrison suffered crushing chest injuries in the accident, which occurred at about 3:10 a.m., Friday, on rain-slickened Highway 63 in Hudson. The driver of one of the cars, was taken by Waterloo ambulance to Schoitz Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Another area man, Gerald Harmsen, rural Reinbeck, was taken to Schoitz Hospital as a result of the mishap with chest and head injuries. Harmsen, who was the driver of the other car was reported in fair condition at the hospital earlier this week.

Iowa State Troopers who investigated the accident indicated that the two cars apparently met nearly head-on.

Services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church here with Rev. Andrew Stewart-Morris officiating. Casket bearers were Richard Trask, Robert Kriz, Wayne Janssen, Vernon Zmolek, Curt Bohnstengel and jim Mintz. The organist was Mrs. leland Sealock, and Mrs. Burdell Staker was the solist. Burial followed at Buckingham Cemetery.

Ricky Joe Harrison was born April 7, 1950 at Waterloo, the son of James Ray and Ramona (Hogan) Harrison. He attended North Tama High School, Traer, graduating with the class of 1968.

After graduation he worked at the Standard Oil service station here and later worked for the Silver Streak Lanes. His most recent employment was with Manatt's Ready Mix Co. as well as the Towne House Restaurant here.

He is survived by his parents, one brother, James R., jr., Traer, and two sisters, Vicki Lomax, Traer, and Mrs. Mary Patton, Douglas, GA. Also surviving are his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hogan, Iowa Falls.

Overton Funeral Home, Traer was in charge of arrangements.
