James Lee Smith, 60 of Waterloo, Iowa, died on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Allen Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Jim was born on June 25, 1943 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of William and Maude (Randall) Smith. He was baptized in Waterloo, Iowa. He attended school in Waterloo and graduated in 1962 from East High School. He was united in marriage to Diane Dotson on July 13, 1963 at St. John Catholic Church, Waterloo. He worked at Titus Manufacturing from 1962 until 1974. He then started working at Schumacher Elevator in Denver. He worked there until his retirement on April 1, 1994.

Jim had a tremendous love for horses and over the years he had many horses that he showed and bred. He was a member of the Iowa Paint Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, and various saddle clubs in the area. He also enjoyed boating and his dogs. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, one son, Todd Smith and his wife, Jackie of Olin, Iowa; two daughters, Tammy DeWald and her husband, Michael of Jesup, Iowa; Tracy Schiefelbein and her husband, Scott of Waterloo, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Justin, Mason, Cassidy and Whitney Smith; Alex, Katelyn, and Emily DeWald; Hunter, Dakota, and Tanner Schiefelbein; two brothers, Leonard Smith and Jerry Smith of Terrrell, Texas; one sister, Cheryl Adler of Terrell, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Dale Smith, one sister, Beverly Gilbert, and his pride and joy, Black Balance.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 19, 2004 at 10:30 am at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver with Pastor Steve Clinkscales officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, rural Montour, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver.
