WATERLOO - Kenneth J. Essmann, 79, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Allen Hospital.

He was born Nov. 5, 1925, in Waterloo, son of Louis and Emma Schellhorn Essmann. He married Betty Skalsky on June 5, 1948, in Waterloo.

Mr. Essmann worked at John Deere PEC for 37 years, retiring in January 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 105 as a 32nd Degree Mason, the Waterloo Auxiliary Police and American Legion Post No. 138.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Kenneth Jr. (Pam) of Waterloo; three daughters, Becky (David ) Hamilos of Johnson City, Tenn., Debra (Patrick) Jaehrling of Schweinfurt, Germany, and Kelli (Edward) Syms of Vicenza, Italy; five grandchildren, Michael (Tara) Essmann, Jason Essmann, Eric Essmann, Joshua Jordon and Savannah Syms; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Hunter Essmann; two brothers, Charles (Maxine) and Lewis, both of Waterloo; and two sisters, Erna Galbraith of Waterloo and Roseanna (Veryl) Van Syoc of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ervin; and three sisters, Amanda Essmann, Marina Bruns and Ann Foutch.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
