PIONEER RESIDENT OF ORANGE DIES

Mrs. Elizabeth Fike Passes Away in 90th Year.

Resident of Black Hawk County for Past 40 Years ?Familiarly Known as Grandma Fike

One of the early pioneers of Orange Township, Mrs. Elizabeth Fike, passed away at the home of her son, Samuel Fike, five miles south of Waterloo, about 8 o'clock Tuesday evening, following an illness of only a few weeks, in her 90th year. Mrs. Fike is known over Orange township as "Grandma" Fike and was one of the best liked and most lovable women to be found in the entire county.

For the past forty years she has resided on the same farm, which was sold recently to her son, Samuel. Coming to Iowa in the spring of 1869, the family settled in Orange Township on the very section they have resided on ever since and where a large family of children has grown to young manhood and young womanhood.

The cause of death is due to an injury sustained by a fractured limb on Sept. 13, when in turning in the bed the limb snapped the report of which was loud enough to be heard by members of the family. Since then she has been practically helpless and her vitality has gradually sunk, which with declining health in her advanced years proved too strong to be withstood longer.

Mrs. Elizabeth Fike, nee Elizabeth Blough, was born in Somerset County, Pa., April 26, 1820. She was of German descent. On May 8, 1842, Miss Blough was united in marriage to Jacob Fike, at Somerset, Pennsylvania, where they lived until in March, 1869, when they removed west pitching their tent on the then apparently arid land in Orange Township. Mr. Fike, senior, died April 1, 1902, aged 81 years.

Deceased was a valiant member of the German Baptist Brethren church and was noted for her piety and uprightness in living, devoting much time and attention of late years to church work. The surviving relatives are: Christian Fike, Vesper, Idaho; Mrs. Sarah Lohr, Bedford county, Pa.; John Fike, Waterloo; Mrs. Susannah Grady, Orang township; Samuel Fike, Orange Township, at whose home she passed away; and Mrs. Mary Blough, Orange township, children. The surviving brothers and sistes are: Mrs. Sarah Cable of Waterloo, and Aaaron Blough, Chris Blough, Mrs. Rachael Shrock, Mrs. Susie Keller, and Emanuel Blough, all of Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning from the German Baptist Brethren Church in Orange Township, conducted by the pastor. Interment will be made in Orange Township Cemetery.
