[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, October 13, 2013]

Diane Kay (Schmitz) Carr, 57, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, in Bryan, Texas, after six courageous years with glioblastoma brain cancer.

She was born Nov. 11, 1955, in Waterloo, to Maurice and Vernita Schmitz. She graduated from Wapsie Valley High School, Fairbank, in 1973. She graduated from Hawkeye Institute of Technology with an associate degree in accounting.

She is survived by her sons, Jordon, Travis and Spencer; her granddaughter, Charlie, and Charlie’s mother, Meagan. Diane also leaves behind her parents, as well as siblings: Kathy (Jim) Vogel, Ken Schmitz, Don Schmitz, Russ (Lana) Schmitz, Lauri (Gary) Wehling, Gene (Deb) Schmitz, Cheryl (Steve Roth) Schmitz, and Jackie (Jeff) McFarlane; and 38 nieces and nephews.

Diane is preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Elizabeth Carr.

Diane's career spanned J.C. Penney, John Deere, Eagles Food Stores, and her most recent role as Assistant to the Chief of Staff at Texas A&M for a decade until 2007. She married Nick Kahlon in 1977; they were married six years. She married Steve Carr in 1984; they were married 22 years.

Her greatest job, by far, was that of a mother. Her children were the light of her life and her daily joy! She adored them.

Diane was an eternal optimist, loyal, honest, adventurous, creative, and always artistic. She could be very trusting, but also savvy and resourceful. She never tired of trying new things, laughing, and doing something kind or mischievous for another person. Diane loved her family deeply, and each has touching and funny stories about her. She treasured her friends from decades past as well as those from Texas A&M, Church, the Luther Crew, and business ventures.

A rosary will be held at 5:30 p.m., followed by visitation until 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at Hillier Funeral Home, Bryan, and a memorial mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, College Station, Texas. Diane will be interred at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Bryan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to Compassionate Care Hospice, 3833 S. Texas Ave No. 100, Bryan, TX 77802, who provided tender care to Diane and the family.
