WATERLOO - Gary E. Spears, 65, of Springfield, Ill., and Cuba, Ill., formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

He was born Jan. 7, 1940, in Waterloo, son of Elwyn B. and Ramona E. Frisbie Spears. He married Janice M. Solem on June 25, 1960, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Falls.

Mr. Spears was a 1958 graduate of West Waterloo High School, Waterloo, and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a program director for WICS News Channel 20 for 37 years, retiring in 2001. He was past chairman of the board of Springfield Community Action.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kathy Spears of Springfield; a son, Michael S. of Springfield; two sisters, Beverly and Barbara Spears, both of Waterloo; and two brothers, Gene (Darlene) of Waterloo and Steve of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Marlys Spears.

Memorial services 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Falls, where friends may call for an hour before. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kirlin-Egen & Butler Funeral Home, Springfield, with a 5:45 p.m. prayer service.
