Lawrence W. Duggan, 91 of Waterloo, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, in Waterloo.

Larry was born at home in Dubuque, on Sept. 21, 1922, son of Mary Loretta (Desmond) and Francis J. Duggan. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterloo in 1941. He married LaVon Pendergast on May 1, 1948, at Sacred Heart Parish in Waterloo.

Larry is survived by his wife, two sons, Daniel L. (Barb) Duggan of Waterloo and Kevin J. (Mary Ann) Duggan of Cedar Rapids and two daughters, Peggy (Mike) LaCoste and Barb Cannon. Grandchildren are Bryan Duggan and Erin (Bob) Brown; Casey Duggan, Molly (Dan) Rosteck and Brennan Duggan; Sean (Nicole) LaCoste and Shane LaCoste; Haley, John and Bridget Cannon and eight great-grandchildren.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings; Roy (Boots) Duggan, Velma (Walt) Mayer, Lavine Sarah (Don) Klein and his son-in-law, Tom Cannon and several nieces and nephews. Larry was the last surviving member of his generation of the Duggan clan.

Larry worked his way up through the ranks at Iowa Public Service Co. (what is now MidAmerican Energy) and retired in 1986 after many years. In retirement he volunteered as a driver for the Covenant Cancer Treatment Center Care-A-Van transporting patients from all over northeast Iowa to and from the cancer center in Waterloo.

Larry was a World War II naval veteran serving in the Pacific theatre.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and the U. S. Navy Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Monday.

Memorials may be made to St. Edward’s Catholic Church or the Waterloo Catholic Worker House.

Larry truly enjoyed his 100 percent Irish roots and was an active member of the Five Sullivan Brothers Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for many years. All will miss his quick Irish wit and dry humor.
