DEATH OF GERTIE COUCH.—For several days our people had been anxiously awaiting news from the bedside of Gertie Conch and although her death was not unexpected, yet when the pale messenger came on last Thusday evening, it sent a thrill of sorrow throught our entire community.

Gertie Couch, only daughter of Judge C. F. Couch, was born in this city March 8, 1875, and was consequently 11 years, 9 months and 28 days old at the time of her death. On Christmas night she was attacked with typhoid fever and although everything was done that medical science or the tenderness of loving hearts could suggest, her life slowly ebbed away and at 8 o'clock Thursday evening, Jan. 6th, the last glimmering spark went out, leaving bruised and broken hearts to mourn her spirit's flight. None but those who have passed through the valley can rightly appreciate the depth of human sorrow which the loss of loved ones begets. Hence the especially bereaved father whose only daughter goes to join her angel mother, receives our liveliest sympathy, while for the grandfather and grandmother, in whose home Gertie had grown up like a beautiful flower, and for the other sorrowing relatives who loved her, goes forth our sincere condolence.

The funeral services were held at the residence of Robert manson, grandfather of deceased, on Sunday afternoon, Rev. E. N. Barrett, of Independence, officiating. The house was crowded with mourning friends, while a profusion of beautiful flowers fashioned in shapes symbolic of love and hope, embowered the casket of the departed. The remarks of the pastor were tenderly appropriate, the songs sweetly touching and after one last look at the beloved features, all that was mortal of Gertie Couch was borne to Elmwood Cemetery and laid to rest by the side of her mother.
