MEXICAN WAR VETERAN DIES

Fred Hacker, veteran of the Mexican war, died at 1:30 this morning at the home of a son, Joseph Hacker, 301 Webster Street. He had made his home with his son for more than a quarter of a century and had been gradually failing for a couple of years. His condition last night seemed unchanged until shortly before the died.

He came to America and the same year enlisted in the United States marine service, fighting under Captain Randolph on the battleship Albany. His term of service ended in 1851 and he married Catharine Janson in Philadelphia. They moved to Dubuque in 1856 and came to Waterloo in 1870, at the time of the removal of the Illinois Central shops. He worked for the Central about 26 years. Mrs. Hacker died Feb. 19, 1867.

Of the eight children only two survive, Joseph, of Waterloo, and Frank, of Friend, Nebraska. There are seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The remains have been conveyed to Hileman & Gindt's Undertaking parlor, where friends may view the body. Shipment to Dubuque will be made Sunday or Mondy for Interment. Funeral arrangements will be made after the Nebraska son arrives.
