Services for Michael Jay Schmiesing, 12, of 306 Westboume Road. will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls with burial in Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls.

Michael died Sunday at Schoitz Memorial Hospital of injuries received in a car accident Saturday afternoon on Rainbow Drive in Cedar Falls.

He was born Feb. 23, 1969, in Minneapolis, son of Erling A. and Kay Trytten Schmiesing, He was a sixth grade student at Edison Middle School. He was a newspaper carrier for the Waterloo Courier.

Survivors include his parents; a brother, Eric at home; a sister, Lisa of Madison, Wis.; paternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schmiesing of St. James, Minn.; and maternal grandfather, Norman Trytten of Decorah.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. Monday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. The casket will not be open.

A memorial will be established at a later date.

CEDAR FALLS - A Saturday afternoon accident has claimed the life of a 12 year old Waterloo boy, Michael Jay Schmiesing of 305 Westbourne Road. He died Sunday at Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, where he was being treated for head injuries after a car and pickup truck were involved in a head-on collision on Rainbow Drive. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schtniesing.

Three other young people in the car in which Michael was riding were hospitalized after the accident.

Police said Diane Baldwin, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Baldwin of 1603
Garden Ave., was driving the vehicle. She was issued a citation for crossing the center line.

Michael Schmiesing was hospitalized in critical condition with head injuries at Sartori Memorial Hospital. He later was transferred to Schoitz Memorial Hospital.

The 1:20 p.m. accident Saturday occurred when the car driven by Miss Baldwin crossed the center line in the 2500 block of Rainbow Drive and collided with an oncoming pickup truck, police said.

Also injured in the accident were Miss Baldwin; Katherine Kortmeyer, 13. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kortmeyer of 3104 Grand Blvd.; and Paul Miller Jr., 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Miller of 204 Urnbeth Road, Waterloo. They were treated at Sartori Memorial Hospital and later released.

Occupants of the pickup truck, Jeffery Nelson, 25, and his wife Debra, 26, of 411
Rownd St., were treated at Sartori Memorial Hospital and released.
