Funeral services will be Friday at 3 p. m. at the First Congregational Church for Herman C. Miller, 6O. of 525 Home Park Boulevard, who died at St. Francis Hospital at 5 a. m. Wednesday.

The senior partner in the Herman C. Miller Insurance Co. died of complications incident to
leukemia.

A general insurance agent for 39 years. Mr. Miller was born June 3, 1889, in Reinbeck, la., the son of Hermann and Josie Akers Miller. He had been in failing health since 1947.

He was instrumental in obtaining funds for construction of the municipal airport. He conferred many time with army officials and the secretary of war during the period 1941-42.

He was educated in Reinbeck schools and came to Waterloo in 1906. In 1907 he went to the University of Iowa and returned to Waterloo in 1908 and associated himself with the Iowa Manufacturers Fire Insurance Co., now the Iowa Fire Insurance Co. After leaving that concern in 1910 he entered the insurance business for himself, later founding the company that now bears his name.

Commissioned as an officer in the intelligence corps in World war I. he served with the 346th regiment, 87th (Acorn) division, in France. He was a first lieutenant when separated from the service. Following his release from the army he became interested in the American Legion and helped establish a number of posts in Iowa, particularly in northeastern Iowa. He served as commander of Becker-Chapman Post here in 1922; was commander of the northeast Iowa district in 1923, and was state vice-commander in 1924. Headed C of C. A member of Waterloo Lodge No. 105, AF&AM, he was also active in the Grand commandery. Knights Templar, the shrine an council.

He served as secretary and later, president of the Waterloo club and Chamber of Commerce in 1928-29. When those two bodies merged into the Chamber of Commerce he was president in 1941-42. Active in Rotary work, he served as president of that body during the 1945-46 term. Several times he was president of the Spokesman club.

He was also a member of BPOE 290. In addition to serving as president of the Waterloo Association of Insurance Agents, he was a director of the Iowa Fire Insurance Co. He was an active participant in the YMCA, the Red Cross, the Community fund, and other civic projects. A member of the First Congregational church, he was an elder for many years.

He, married Mary Holbrook Northey, Jan. 3, 1920. Two sons were born to this union. James N. and Herman III. His oldest son, James, has been the junior partner in the company and will now assume the leadership of the concern.

His parents and his wife preceded him in death.

He is survived by his two sons, both at home, two brothers. Milo, Milwaukee. Wis.; Max, Galena, Ill., and his uncle. Carl Miller, 315 Randolph Street

The body is at Kearns Garden chapel where it will remain until the services Friday. Rev. Charles Jacobs, pastor of First Congregational church, will officiate, and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will also be services by the American Legion and Masonic lodge at times to be announced later.
