WATERLOO -- Harry L. Nelsen, 83, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center.

He was born Sept. 20, 1929, in Traer, son of Carl and Stella Chizek Nelsen. He married Marlys Henry on May 14, 1955, in Waterloo.

Mr. Nelsen was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1946 to 1950. He was employed with Chamberlain’s Manufacturing, Viking Pump and retired from Waterloo John Deere Tractor Works on Sept. 30, 1989.

Survived by his wife; a son, Jeff (Kim) of Holland; three daughters, Susan Nelsen of Waterloo, Linda (Pat) Hayes of Wayzata, Minn., and Nancy (Larry) Hayes of Minneapolis; five grandchildren, Lauren (Paul) Bennett, Mitchell (April) Nelsen, Hauns (Trista) Nelsen, Mia (Jason) Smith and Nathan Hayes; three great-grandchildren, Chloe and Mackenzie Nelsen and Kai Smith; a brother, Elden Nelsen of Waterloo; and a sister, Elaine (Bob) Ehlers of Reinbeck.

Preceded in death by a son, Steven; a grandson, Nicholas Hayes; three brothers, Wayne (Lucy), Michael and Scott.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with burial in Poyner Township Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, assisted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and for an hour before services on Friday.
