[Iowa State Reporter, Wednesday, June 16, 1875, Waterloo, Iowa]

Eliza Good Doxey was born in Alexandria, VA in Sept 1792, married Sailing-master Doxey of the U.S. Navy and removed to Baltimore, where they lived for 25 years. She was converted and joined the M. E. Church under the ministry of Rev.John Davis of Baltimore Conference. Her husband died when 42 years of age, but not until converted, mainly through the influence of his devoted wife.

After removing to Norfolk, VA and back to Baltimore, she was induced to follow her sons' example in removing to the west, residing a while in Richmond, Indiana, and thence to Waterloo, Iowa, where she has resided for almost 20 years, so that she was recognized as one of the old settlers.

Though by reason of her infirmities she has been debarred the privileges of public worship for now about 5 years, her Christian life & graces have been nourished and watered by diligent study of the Bible and other Christian literature, by private & social prayer and conferences, with devout ministers and members of all the churches. For many months a prayer meeting was sustained in her house on every Friday morning and in no house perhaps in this vicinity, have more frequent or profitable religious visits been made than in that of Grandma Doxey. For that reason she preferred keeping house and living by herself, rather than with any of her six children; she loved to be alone with her Bible and good books, with her Saviour and his disciples, and then to have her children and grandchildren visit her and recieve her blessing. Last fall it became apparent that she must give up attempting to keep house, so she spent the winter with one child and the last 2 months with another. The earthly tabernacle was dissolving, the weary wheels of life revolved slowly, and at last stood still on Thursday last, June 10th at 4 p.m. Her age was 83 years, 9 months. She leaves six children, 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren - making in all 32 descendants.

Never, in a ministry of 26 years have we known one of her age so intelligent, so devout, and yet so sprightly. Through Heaven may be enriched by her advent among its pure inhabitants, earth certainly seems impoverished since her departure from us.

How attractive a world all of whose denizens "are in spirit one," with a saint like the dear departed. Let not only every child and grandchild, but all the dear friends who for years have claimed her as "grandma", heed her last loving counsel, "Love Christ, children, and meet me in His blessed presence.
