[Waterloo Daily Courier, Thursday, February 19, 1903, Waterloo, Iowa]

Miss Lizzie Flood, a well-known young lady residing on the west side of the river, passed away very unexpectedly at the Emergency hospital at 9:30 last night. She bad gone to the hospital early in the week to undergo an operation which a council of physicians had told her would be necessary not only to restore her health, but to save her life. She had been in poor health for several years, but of late she had apparently failed more rapidly than before. So, in the hope of securing relief by surgery, she submitted to an operation last Tuesday.

The operation was wholly successful, and the patient recovered nicely from the administering of the anaesthetic, and in fact was thought to be on the rapid road to recovery up to a half hour before she died last evening. She was cheerful and hopeful, and yesterday asked for something to eat. Her physician said she might have a little beef tea, which she took and which appeased the pangs of hunger. The hopeful signs of a speedy and complete recovery continued until last evening when the nurse noticed her pulse was so faint as to be hardly discernible. The doctor was called, but the heart would not respond to treatment, and the young lady passed away. Heart failure is ascribed as the cause. It has been learned that her father passed away with the same trouble while suffering from an attack of the grip.

Decedent was about 30 years old, and she had made her home here for the past twelve or fifteen, years. She sewed for a living and in this way she was known intimately in many homes.

She had lived with Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Howrey ever since their marriage up to the time they sold their residence on Western Avenue, since which time she has been rooming at L. Sarvay's to which place her remains were removed, and where they now are awaiting the funeral and interment.

Her father died in Butler County and it is believed she was born in that county. She has no relatives here now, a sister, who lived with her for several years, having married and moved away some time ago. A brother lives at Allison and he will arrive here today to see about the disposition of the body.

Miss Flood was a member of First M. E. church and attended services there regularly. She was highly regarded because of her attractive character, and her death causes sincere mourning in many hearts.

Friends desiring to see the remains may have the opportunity from 8 to 9 tomorrow at the Survey home. It is probable the remains will be taken away tomorrow.
