WATERLOO — Frances Marie VanGorder, 83, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Aug. 31, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Iowa City, from complications of heart surgery.

She was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Vinton, daughter of Jake and Mary Ruth Hay Henkle. She married Milton George VanGorder on Dec. 26, 1947, in Waukon. He died Dec. 28, 1990.

Mrs. VanGorder worked for Rath Packing Co. and for the Mental Health Hospital, Independence, as an aide. She and her husband owned and operated the Rush Park Café and Tavern, Independence.

Survived by a son, Dennis of Independence; four daughters, Rita (Tim Schults) Pillard of Waverly, Nancy (Richard) Michels of Bend, Ore., Jeanette (Dan) Miller of Bowie, Md., and Betty VanGorder of Coon Rapids, Minn.; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Albert, Charles and Richard Henkle; three sisters, Zelda Dinnibier, Mary DoVoogd and Evelyn Gautney; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Henkle-Evans.

Preceded in death by her husband; her special friend, Ralph Huffman; a daughter, Shirley VanGorder; two sons, Tom and Dale VanGorder; and two brothers, Ivan (Bernadine) VanGorder and Edward VanGorder.

Services were 10:30 a.m. today at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial at 1:30 p.m. in St. John’s Cemetery, Independence. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

After selling the Rush Park, Frances and her husband moved to Evansdale where she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and days with family and friends.
