WATERLOO — Dr. Gardner D. Phelps, 89, of 3720 Village Place, died there Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, of natural causes.

He was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Waterloo, son of Dexter B. and Lulu Gardner Phelps. He married Virginia Kuning on June 16, 1936, in Cedar Rapids.

Dr. Phelps received a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and a master's degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa in 1936. He was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was an instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the College of Medicine, University of Michigan.

His foreign Medical Mission tours include Presbyterian Hospital, Annapolis, Brazil, in 1965; Foreign Ophlhalmological Care from the U.S. in Haiti from 1966-76; Laymen's Overseas Service at Methodist Medical Clinic, Bolivia, in 1967; Care Medico in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras, in 1968; AMDOC at Brethren Hospital, Castaner, Puerto Rico; and with the Maryknoll Mission Hospitals, Guatemala, in 1970. He was president of the Black Hawk County Medical Society and on staff of four hospitals in Black Hawk County.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Dr. Dale G. Phelps and Dr. Gary K. Phelps, both of Waterloo, and Dr. Laurence M. Phelps of Bamboo, Wis.; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a son, Dr. Charles Phelps.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Dec. 16 at Trinity Episcopal Parish. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.
