John K. Gates, 78, of Rowley, died at home Tuesday, Jan. 31, following a short illness.

He was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Waterloo, son of Donald J. and Drucie A. Bower Gates. On July 17, 1945, he married Dorothy A. Davis in Savannah, Ill.

Mr. Gates attended Waterloo schools and had worked as a journeyman electrician in various towns, prior to settling in Brandon in 1967. In 1973 the family moved to a farm near Rowley, and he worked through the IBEW Local 288 in Waterloo, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Mike (Sue) of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Cindy Harris of Waterloo and Christi (Randy) Hess of Dyersville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a great-grandson; and three brothers, Harold, Glen and Roy Acuff.

Masonic memorial service: 7 p.m. Sunday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, where friends may call from 6 p.m. until services.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until services. Inurnment will be held at Wilson Cemetery, Independence.
