WATERLOO — Bernadette L. Klatt, 88, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center from complications of pneumonia.

She was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Lake City, daughter of William and Mary (Collins) Welsh. They later moved to Lohrville, and then LaMoille. She met her future husband, Marvin Klatt, a Curtiss Candy salesman, while working at a Marshalltown grocery store. They were married Nov. 18, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marshalltown. Marvin died July 27, 1999.

Bernadette was employed at a number of Waterloo businesses throughout her life, beginning at Rath Packing Company, then Sunnyside Country Club, Varley Drug, a local DX gas station, Friedl’s Prime Rib Room, Jack’s Café and, for 27 years, The Steamboat Garden Restaurant. Simply put, she loved people.

Survived by three daughters, Rita (Joe) Morris of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Mary Klatt (Mike Sulentic) and Rebecca (Brian) Kuhlman, all of Waterloo; a son, Curt Klatt (Karen Kayser), also of Waterloo, two grandchildren, Zack Klatt (Heidi Curran) of Des Moines and Karry (Eric) Dolash of Southern Pines, N.C,; their mother, Mary Jo Klatt (Jack Smith) of Waterloo; a great-grandson, Carson James Klatt; and a sister, Lucille (Bob) Tvedt of Montour.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Sally; four brothers, Joe, Maurice, Leo “Bud” and Edward “Eugene;” and a sister, Mary Schaefer.

Bernadette was fiercely devoted to her family. Whenever possible, she would gather us all for her wonderful Sunday dinners and insisted every member have their own special birthday meal. She did everything she could to make holidays beautiful. In 1996, she traveled to the nation of her ancestry (Ireland), and in 2009, celebrated her 85th birthday in Las Vegas with family. Bernadette will always be remembered as one of the kindest, most generous souls in the world. All who knew her were positively touched by her warm, loving spirit. We will miss her deeply.

Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, and will include a Celebration of Life service.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Bend Humane Society, Cedar Valley Hospice, and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
