John Mead, 89, died in his sleep early Friday morning at his home, 1013 Wellington Street, following a lengthy illness with carcinoma.

Mr. Mead was born in Rockford, Ill., Oct. 14, 1861, the son of Chauncey and Jane Boswell Mead. He came to Waterloo as a boy and on Oct. 2, 1884, married Mary Jane Holdiman in Waterloo.

He was a retired blacksmith for the Illinois Central railroad, and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian church.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Olive Strom, Beaumont, Cal.; Mrs. Sadie Tisdale, Port Arthur, Tex., and Mrs. Katherine Anderson, 1013 Wellington Street; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and one brother.

The body is at Kearns Garden Chapel where funeral arrangements are pending.
