Mrs. Nielsen graduated from Augustana Academy, Canton, S.D., in 1943. She was a homemaker, provided in-home childcare and sold Avon products for many years. She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls.

Survived by three daughters: Marilyn (Dave) Voorhis of Longmont, Colo., Marlys (Sim) Austin of Avon, Conn., and Maren Nielsen of Wichita, Kan.; three sons, Lynn (Mary) and Curtis (Janet), both of Cedar Falls, and Jerel (Yvonne) of Windsor, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Elva will be remembered for her persistence, determination and hard work. While she spent the first portion of her adult life teaching her children how to live, she spent the last of her life teaching them how to live well in the face of adversity — truly a living legacy.
