CEDAR FALLS - Merlin "Butch" Gardner, 62, of 6111 Sunnyside Drive, died Tuesday, Feb 6, 1996, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, of lung cancer.

He was born March 27, 1933, in Des Moines, son of Bert A. Smelser arid Norma Buck Blomgren. He married Mildred Gerjets on Sept. 27, 1959, in Waterloo.

Mr Gardner worked for John G. Miller Construction in Waterloo until it closed, then became a self-employed side applicator. He then worked for Carl Schuler Masonry Co., Waterloo, retiring in 1995

Survived by his wife; three daughters: Brenda Niedert of Waterloo, and Kimberly Stewart and Angela Hicks, both of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren and two step grandchildren; his mother of Waterloo; two sisters Joan Johnson of Waterloo and Janet Rigdon of Florida; four brothers: Ralph Smelser of Cedar Falls, Gene Smelser of Rockford, Ill., William Buck of Texas and Larry Buck of North Dakota; three stepbrothers: Orlin Buck of Davenport, Verle Buck of Waterloo and Merlin Buck of Florida; and a stepsister, Frances Trebon of Fairbank.

Preceded in death by an infant son, Andy D.; a sister; two brothers and a stepbrother.

Services 1 p.m. Friday at our Savior's Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, rural Cedar Falls. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
