WATERLOO — Marlys C. Ackerman, 87, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at Manorcare Health Services.

She was born April 18, 1926, in Littleton, daughter of Richard and Eva Moritz Westphal. On Dec. 1, 1962, she married John H. Ackerman in Dakota City, Neb. He died in 2003.

Mrs. Ackerman graduated from Jesup Community High School, Jesup, in 1944. She worked as a telephone operator for Western Union for 25 years, was a bus driver for the Waterloo School District for three years, and was involved with the Methodist ministry with her husband for 10 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Waterloo.

Survived by a daughter, Kathy J. (David) Helmrichs of Evansdale; two sons, John (Helen) of Cedar Falls and Guy of Waterloo; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Sherrie (Jerry) Peters of Waterloo; two nephews, Rick (Michelle) Westphal of Waterloo and Ralph Westphal Jr. of Cottage Grove, Minn.; and a niece, Hope (Brian) Harris of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Ralph G. and Clair R. Westphal.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service.
