WATERLOO — Mark L. McGivern, 101, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Jan. 15, 1912, in Marengo, son of Thomas P. and Mary Ellen Flanagan McGivern. He married Melba H. Gahring on Dec. 25, 1940, at St. Patrick Church, Marengo. She died Jan. 6, 2006.

Mr. McGivern enlisted in World War II and served from 1942 to 1945 in the 36th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) in the South Pacific. He was hired at John Deere in 1940 for 36 years, retiring in 1976.

Survived by a daughter, Patricia A. (Randal K. Robinson) McGivern of Waterloo; and a grandson, Brian K. (Reanne) Robinson of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by four sisters, Amy Gode, Ethel Flynn, Florence Nutting and Helen McGivern; and three brothers, Thomas, Fergus and Father Carroll McGivern.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, where flag folding will be conducted. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
