Kent was born in Waterloo to Ralph and Doris Alexander on April 21, 1925. He graduated from Waterloo East High School and received a teaching degree from the Iowa Teachers College. He later earned a master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa.
Kent married Madonna “Dona” Augustine in 1949. Kent and Dona had four daughters. Kent, Dona and the kids loved fishing and camping. For many summers, they vacationed in Harpers Ferry. In their retirement years, Kent and Dona spent winters in Arizona and Texas.
Kent was a math and science teacher in various area schools; he also coached football and swim teams. He worked as the aquatic director for the Waterloo Parks and Recreation for many years and later as manager of Splash Inc. During his time with these organizations, Kent (and Dona) taught many Waterloo youth how to swim and safely enjoy the water. Kent also was involved with the Waterloo Search and Rescue Team using his scuba diving skills to help others.
Kent was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dona, and his parents.
He is survived by his brother, Gale Alexander of Southold, N.Y., and four daughters, Gail (McKnight) of Fairfield Bay, Denise (Abbott) of Kansas City, Mo., Debbie (Morrison) of Waterloo and Judy (Wiedemeier) of Buffalo Center. He also is survived by four sons-in-law, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Kent’s family and friends will miss his wisdom, his guidance and his unconditional love. The family has planned a private memorial in his honor.
