[Waterloo Daily Courier, Tuesday, October 23, 1900, Waterloo, Iowa]

Veghter S. Van Duyn, aged 78 years, and a resident of Waterloo for 32 years, died this morning at 10 o'clock at his home on Washington Street of old age. For several years past the deceased had been in frail health but during the past two years there has been a rapid decline. He had been unconscious since yesterday and life slowly ebbed away.

Mr. Van Duyn was born in Somerset County, N. J., Oct. 12, 1822. While he was yet a child his parents moved to Cayuga County, N. Y., where he was married June 1, 1846, to Elizabeth Ann Herriek and to the couple the only child, Frank F. Van Duyn, who now lives in Malwaukee, was born.

He moved to Erie county, N. Y., where he lived for a time, and afterwards to Michigan. In October 1868, he moved to Waterloo and has lived here since.

His first, wife having died, he married Miss, Eugenia Belden of Cedar Falls, in 1878, who survives him. Besides her and his son, he has a brother, J. W. Van Duyn, living in Waterloo and a sister in Indiana.

Mr. Van Duyn practiced the profession of veterinary surgery for many years and was one of the best in Waterloo until failing health prevented his following the occupation. He was a man of high ideals of life, an excellent father and husband, a neighbor of great esteem and only words of praise are heard in his behalf.

He was a member of First M. E. church and Rev. J. E. Johnson of that church will conduct the funeral which, will be held from his late home on Washington Street at 2 p. m. tomorow. Burial will be in Elmwood.
