H. S. Gilkey Dies;
Longtime Business
Man and BankerCedar Falls—Henry S. Gilkey, 88. for many years a prominent banker and business man here, who had been living a retired life for the last decade, died at his home, 903 Washington Street, early Tuesday.
Death was due to ailments incident to his advanced age. He had been a semi-invalid for the last seven years, following a nervous breakdown.
He and Mrs. Gilkey were residing in California at the time and had been there about five years when his nervous collapse occurred.
They returned to their home here, where Mrs. Gilkey died June 16, 1947.
The couple's only son, Francis Gilkey, who returned here from Minneapolis to care for his father, is at present a patient in a Waterloo hospital, convalescing from two operations.
Henry Gilkey was born on a farm north of Cedar Falls Nov. 7, 1859. He attended the public schools here and as a young man worked at various things, and was in the grocery business for a time. Later he became interested in other lines of business, was made president and manage of the Cedar Falls Canning Co., which he headed for many years and made into a profitable institution.
For a number of years he was president of the Cedar Falls National Bank (now the Cedar Falls Trust & Savings Bank) and later was predisent of the Townsend-Merrill Lumber Co., which operates a string of lumber yards in northeast Iowa. He was also a director in other local concerns and was one of the outstandingly successful men of Cedar Falls.
He was a member of the Masonic order and charter member of the Cedar Falls Rotary club. He was a trustee of the Congregational Church for several years.
The body was taken to Dahl's Funeral Home. It will be cremated and burial will await such time as Francis Gilkey completes his convalescence and is able to attend a memorial service.
Mr. Gilkey's ashes will be buried beside those of his wife in Fairview Cemetery.
