WATERLOO — Mary C. Smith Stewart, 93, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Hospice House, Cape Coral.

She was born May 24, 1920, in Galena, Ill., daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Goodwin Smith. She married Robert Stewart on May 24, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Stewart graduated from St. John’s Catholic School, Independence. She had worked at the telephone company in Independence, then went to Washington, D.C., where she worked for J. Edgar Hoover, Krugers Office in Detroit, and retired to Cape Coral. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Cape Coral. She volunteered at the church and at Cape Coral Hospital.

Survived by a sister, Bernita Moon of Waterloo; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Smith; and six brothers, Phillip, William, Lawrence, Harold, Herbert and James Smith.

Burial was held in Columbind section at Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C., The family will gather Aug. 10 at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, for a mass and celebration of her life.
