EVANSDALE—Devon James Anthony Mosher, 2, of 915 Second Ave., died Monday. Dec. 18, at home of smoke inhalation.

He was born Jan. 12, 1998, in Waterloo, son of Marvin Mosher III and Bambi L. Morrison.

Survived by his father of Cedar Rapids; paternal grandfather, Marvin Mosher II of Cedar Rapids; paternal
grandmother, Christine Mosher of Dysart; maternal grandparents. Leland and Deborah Morrison of Evansdale; paternal great-grandparents, Marvin and Edna Mosher of Shellsburg; maternal great-grandmother and stepgreat-grandfather, Leona and Tom Taylor of Cedar Falls; maternal great-grandfather and step great-grandmother, Norbert and Marcie Trainor of Waterloo; and maternal great-great-grandmother, Una Mickey of Cedar Falls.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Eagle Center, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Contributions may be directed to memorial funds at Community National Bank, John Deere Community Credit Union or the American Red Cross.

A house fire that killed two young adults and a child Monday morning started as the toddler played with, a
lighter in the basement, an investigation by fire and police officials has determined.

Chad Morrison, 23, his sister, 21-year-old Bambi Morrison, and her 2- year-old son, Devon James Anthony Mosher, died of smoke inhalation despite rescuers' efforts to save them. Devon would have turned 3 next
month.

All three lived at the home at 915 Second Ave. in the Casebeer Heights neighborhood of Evansdale with Chad and Bambi's parents, Leland "Lee" D. and Deborah K. Morrison.

As far as fatalities, the fire was the worst blaze in Evansdale in recent memory.

Authorities believe young Devon got the idea to play with the grill lighter a day earlier-when he watched adults use it to light candles during a birthday celebration.

Deborah Morrison told investigators she put the lighter in a drawer after the birthday party, but the child apparently retrieved it, Evansdale Police Chief Mike Burke said. Devon usually played in the home's finished basement which is where his toys were, authorities said. Evansdale Fire Chief Pete Weber said it was in
the basement's southwest corner that the child ignited clothing on a love seat, and the fire spread from there.

Emergency crews found Devon's body on the other side of the basement - the north end. The lighter was also found in the basement, Burke said.

Meanwhile, investigators believe Chad and Bambi Morrison were asleep upstairs and awoke to smoke rapidly filling the home. The two were found near the front door, leading authorities to believe they were attempting to flee the house when they were overcome by smoke.

Lee and Deborah Morrison were not at home when the fire started, but Deborah arrived home for lunch at about 11:30 a.m. and found the smoke-filled home, Weber said. Jillian Pietan and her brother, Jeffery, heard Deborah's cries for help as they got off their school bus from Elk Run Heights Elementary School. They ran and told their mother, and police and firefighters were on the scene within four minutes.

The house did not have a smoke alarm, Weber said. He said the home did have an older heat alarm on the main floor, but investigators were not able to determine if the device was working. Weber described the heat alarm as a discontinued forerunner of the smoke alarm.
