EVANSDALE — George L. Atkins, 78, of Evansdale, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at his home following complications of cancer.

He was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Cedar Falls, son of Floyd L. and Beva L. Ulin Atkins. He married Loraine Buls Feb. 2, 1952, in Victor. A U.S. Army veteran of World War JI and the Korean War, Mr. Atkins was employed by John Deere for 35 years, retiring in 1981. He was a former state commander of AMVETS and also served on the Evansdale City Council for six years.

Survived by his wife; six sons: Craig of Hudson, Mark of Evansdale, Bill of Cedar Falls, Jeff of Dallas
and Bob and Bennie, both of Red Oak, Texas; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Hand of Des Moines.

Preceded in death by a sister, Betty Atkins.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.
