GILBERTVILLE-Harold M. Schmitz, 77, of 5410 Gilbertville Road, died Friday, Dec. 17, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes. He was born Oct. 13, 1922, in Black Hawk County, son of Mike and Anna Kettman Schmitz. He married Hattie Hruska June 3, 1950 in Cresco.

He was owner and operator of Schmitz's Hardware, Gilbertville, for 26 years until retirement in 1987. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was past Commander of the American Legion Nugent-Dumuth Post 714.

Survived by: his wife; three sons, Randy of Evansdale, Howard of Janesville and Tim of Waterloo; three daughters, Janan Weber of Raymond, Lori Skillings of Vergas, Minn., and Paula Firth of East Moline, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Ben and Mike, both of Gilbertville; and two sisters, Marcella Schmitz and Edna LaFlamme, both of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: one brother, Roman; and two sisters, Mildred Frost and Gertrude Schares.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Nugent-Demuth Post 714. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where there will be a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic School, St. Joe's Grade School Development Fund or the church.
