CEDAR FALLS - Harvey R. Backerman was born August 12, 1915, in Herman, Minnesota, the son of Herman Peter and Ida (Davis) Backerman. On December 12, 1936, he was united in marriage to Lois A. Wiltse. She died October 16, 1999.

He was employed at the Waterloo John Deere Tractor Works starting as a set-up man, then in the methods dept., and finally as tool supervisor over 12 departments, retiring in 1975 after 32 years of service. He traveled to Germany for Deere's in 1965 helping purchase equipment for the Mannheim facilty.

Harvey is survived by his daughters, Barbara (Roger) Hazen of Cedar Falls and Ellen (Jerry) Steuk of Ida Grove; six grandchildren, Rick, Troy, Valorie, Kristen, Shawn, and Phil; seventeen great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; brother, Charles Backerman of Cedar Falls; and sister, Margaret Holm of Cedar Falls.

Harvey died Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at the Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, twins, John (Jack) and James, and Harold; sister, Margaret Backerman in infancy; and granddaughter, Denise Johnson.
