WATERLOO - LeRoy J. Elgas, 93, of Waterloo, died Thursday, May 31, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Des Moines, son of John and Helena Harting Elgas. He married Ruth Capps Sept. 6, 1938, in Waterloo. She died Sept. 3, 1978.

Mr. Elgas was employed with various grocery stores, the Railway Express during World War II, Waterloo Paper Company, Santa Claus Industries and retired from the East Waterloo Liquor Store.

Survived by a son, Robert (Katherine) of Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by seven sisters, Cecelia Malloy, Agnes Elgas, Laura Hunter, Helen Elgas, Mary Mau, Lucy Perry and Florence Jaehrling; and two brothers, Urban and John Elgas.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
