CEDAR FALLS — Mary Jean Roberts, 91, of Pine Island, Minn., formerly of Cedar Falls died Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Pine Haven Care Center, Pine Island.

She was born Feb. 7, 1922, in Waterloo, daughter of Howard S. and Verna E. Petersen Smith. She married George Roberts on Sept. 22, 1945, in Waterloo. He died Feb. 16, 1989. She married Floyd Hays on July 10, 1993. He preceded her in death.

She graduated from East High School in 1941. In the 1960s she and her husband moved to Hutchinson, Kan., to purchase and operate a motel for two and a half years. She also worked at Dotson’s, Grants and Hawkeye Steel. She then worked in the office of Viking Pump in 1966 until her retirement on April 1, 1985. She was member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, the Christian Crusaders and the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Women’s Bowling Association.

Survived by: a daughter, Susan (Curt) Dodge of Rochester, Minn.; a grandson, Mike (Danika) Stagemeyer; two stepgrandchildren, Beth (Kevin) Tostenson and Mike Dodge; a great-grandson, Troy Stagemeyer; a stepgreat-grandson, Kevin Tostensen Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Guldner of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Jack Smith of Sigourney.

Preceded in death by: her parents; two sisters, Maxine Duschen and Peggy Madole; and three brothers-in-law, James Duschen, Wendell Madole and Dr. John Guldner.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, An Overton Family Service, Waterloo.
