Update With Name: Woman Dies in Construction Accident in Waterloo

Laborer killed in trench collapse was building sewer for housing project

WATERLOO, Iowa — Waterloo Fire Rescue officials have confirmed construction worker Deea Lauritzen, 35, of Jesup, died Friday from injuries sustained in a trench collapse at a worksite on San Marnan Drive.

Pat Treloar, director of fire services for the city, said Saturday that Lauritzen was deceased upon arrival of his crew at around 1:30 p.m. after the west side of the trench caved in on the woman.

Treloar said firefighters worked for three hours to pull the body from the thick, sticky clay of the trench that was at least 10 feet deep.

At the time of the accident, Lauritzen, an employee of Stickfort Construction, was helping to install a sanitary sewer line as part of a housing project along San Marnan Drive between Ansborough Avenue and West Fourth Street.

Waterloo attorney Jim Walsh, who is part of the development group working on the project, said a portion of San Marnan is being relocated and improved with sewer and water infrastructure to make room for 24 building lots adjacent to the Sunnyside Country Club golf course.

Capt. Ryan Mahood said Saturday that Waterloo Fire Rescue called in nine extra off-duty firefighters and technical rescue team members to help pull the body from the ground. They successfully recovered the body at around 5 p.m. Friday.

Treloar said Waterloo Fire Rescue’s technical rescue team called in the use of a city-owned trench box in an effort to reach the victim. The apparatus was used to keep the team safe against further trench collapse while they recovered the body.

Treloar said the collapse was noticed immediately, and workers called 911.
