MRS. MARY ALICE HICKS.

Word has been received by Mrs. T. U. McManus, 662 Conger Street, of the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Alice Hicks, 84, former Waterloo resident, which occurred Sunday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Inglis, at Redwood Falls, Minnesota, where she resided for the past year. Death followed a stroke of paralysis.

A sister of the late Dr. T. U, McManus of Waterloo and George H. McManus of Boston, Mass., a retired army general, Mrs. Hicks resided in Waterloo shortly after her marriage to Stephen P. Hicks, of Lincoln Township in 1886.

Born in April, 1859*, at Martinsville, Illinois, the daughter of Otho J. and Sally Rupp McManus, she came with her parents to Lincoln Township in infancy. She attended the first Fields Seminary in Waterloo and later was graduated, in the second class to finish at the Iowa State Normal School in 1879. She later taught in the rural schools in Lincoln Township for several years. After moving from Waterloo she resided in Tracy and Minneapolis, Minn., before going to Redwood
Falls to reside with her daughter.

Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Inglis, Redwood Falls, and Mrs. Edward Montgomery, Vesta, Minn., Mrs. George Turner, in California, Mrs. Harvey Nelson, Northfield. Minn.; four sons: Tracy M. Hicks and Will H. Hicks, Pipestone, Minn., Thomas Hicks, Tracy, and Otho Hicks, New York; the brother.

Gen. George H. McManus, of Boston, Mass., and 15 grandchildren, eight of whom are in the armed forces.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1923.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p. m. Thursday at the Federated Church, Hudson, Iowa, with Rev. Harvey Moon in charge. Burial will be in Hudson cemetery. The body is expected to arrive in Waterloo Wednesday evening and will be taken to the O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home.
