Melvin Volker, 80, longtime Hudson area resident, died at his home Saturday, September 4, 1999, of cancer. Services held Wednesday, September 8, 1999 at the Community Church of Hudson with Pastor Joe Sellepack conducting and Locke Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial in Hudson Cemetery with military rites by Hudson Amvet Post 81.

Mel was born June 11, 1919 in Bremer County, Iowa, son of Albert and Clara Meyer Volker. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific in World War II. He married Arlene Sivertsen on June 17, 1961 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was employed by Rath Packing, retiring in 1976. He also farmed while at Rath and after retiring.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Hudson; a son, Jerry Volker of Hudson; a daughter Sherilyn Kistner, also of Hudson; three step-sons, Gary Sivertsen, New Port Richey, Florida, Dennis Sivertsen, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Curtis Sivertsen of Traer, Iowa; a step-daughter, Jilene Regan of Waterloo; a brother, Elmer Volker of Fredricksburg, Iowa; two sisters, Norma Kuepker, Sumner, Iowa and JoAnn Emmel, Dayton, Ohio; twenty-three grandchildren and step grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Leota Schmadeke, a daughter, Connie, and his first wife.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar valley Hospice or Community Church of Hudson.
