Gun Accident Is
Fatal to Man, 78

A 78-year-old Waterloo man, who was a gun enthusiast, died instantly Sunday afternoon when the double-barrel shotgun he was cleaning discharged by accident.

Killed was Henry Pieper, 78, of 1202 W. 7th St. County Medical Examiner Dr. Paul O'Keefe reported that Pieper died instantly of a massive chest injury. He ruled the wound was accidental.

Police reported that Pieper was apparently cleaning his .12 gauge shotgun in a basement den at his home about 2:10 p.m. when the gun discharged. Pieper, who authorities said look meticulous care of his guns, was wearing gloves which officers said he wore while cleaning guns to prevent perspiration marks on the guns. A cleaning rod and used patches were at his side.

Authorities reported that Pieper kept a dummy shell in the gun while it was stored, and it was believed he picked up a live shell by mistake and the gun somehow discharged.

Henry W. Pieper was born on Nov. 29, 1885 in Neligh, Neb. He had been a resident of Waterloo since May of this year, having moved here from Des Moines.

He married Amanda C. Wente in October of 1927 in Cedar Rapids. He was a retired sales representative of the Howard and Collingwood Co. of Ohio.

Surviving are, his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Roger Brunn of 1032 Vine St., and Mrs. Ralph Schultz of 191 Hampshire Road, and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p. m. at the Parrott & Wood funeral home. Officiating will be the Rev. Arnold Tiemeyer, pastor of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, and the Rev. Arthur Simonsen of the Redeemer Lutheran church of Des Moines. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery. The casket will not be opened during or following the services.
